Francis Cheer covers Northcote’s “Drive Me Home”

Victoria band Northcote released their sophomore self-titled record earlier this year in May. If it’s familiar to you, you’d understand why I call it impressive, successfully blending folk, post-punk and rock for a sound that’s not incredibly different, but different enough that it marks uncharted waters for the group. Not only that, but it’s a thorough joy to listen to.

Francis Cheer, moniker of Calgary’s John Gerrard takes a stab at the album’s track “Drive Me Home”. The cover is largely electronic, with Gerrard’s voice floating over synth pop beats, contrasting the original guitar  and drum-driven version. The original does make a 20 second cameo appearance though. This cover doesn’t necessarily reflect what we’re used to hearing from Francis Cheer (self-described “sadcore folk”), but this new sound may be a clue to what the future holds.
